the Wizard of Oz
With this being the first Theatre in the Park performed at Lions Park, we had to
start from scratch.
I designed a stage to add to the existing gazebo and then designed all the sets.
It was no easy task since everything had to be made to withstand the elements of outdoors. We started
by digging a trench (because I had this stupid idea that I wanted trap doors for special effects), then
went from there. I tried to make the sets as 3 dimensional as I could. I used a lot of chicken wire for
the set pieces and decided to use yellow rope lights for the yellow brick road.
A very talented artist friend of mine named Bill Shipman agreed to paint the barndoors and
back wall for me and did a job on it that surprised even me. When all was said and done,
it was a production that was above and beyond average and one that I was proud to have worked on with
Jim Leuschke as producer and B. J. Gray as director.
